Windows Anti-Spyware Beta
Microsoft have released an Anit-Spyware program to the Beta world.
I already use SpyBot and Ad-Aware, so my machine is (should be :*)) pretty clean. I'll run a scan later today.

J-Walk release PUP v6
As an Excel power user, I've been a long-time user of the PUP utilities from John Walkenbach, as well as a purchaser of his excellent books.
He has just released v6 of his tool set.
Highly recommended.

Forty-five percent of Americans also believe that God created human beings pretty much in their present form about 10,000 years ago.
Should I be scared?
These people also believe all the reasons the US used to justify the war in Iraq.

Things I didn't know
- always call tails in a coin flip
- blackjack has the best odds (I knew that one, remember, always split Aces and Eights)
- store woodworking tools in a wooden box to prevent rust (or cover them with a towel to prevent moisture from settling)
- drop a cinamon stick into chili
I'll try the last one - I already make a mean chili, we'll see how it turns out.

Lookout continues to rock!
I had a problem installing the recent version of Lookout. After a posting on the forum, Mike of Lookout Soft (now Microsoft) spent some time with me to figure out what was going on. A week later and with a custom patch installed and now all is well. I discovered that Lookout supports the 'close to' search criteria - that's one that few tools have.
It's amazing how much I missed Lookout, despite having many other search tools (Copernic, Clarity, X1) at my disposal. The tight integration with Outlook makes a big difference.
I have switched to gmail for my personal mail and I'm finding I really like their model of archive + threads with the ability to search.
I may try to do the same thing inside Outlook with Lookout.
At present I archive e-mail by month. I used to use the GTD Add-In, but the last upgrade didn't :*( and the GTD support folks weren't able to make it work at all, not that they tried very hard. (unistall and reinstall is not support in my view).
Maybe I will try just one big archive + Lookout
Lookout email search for Microsoft Outlook - Lookout Software
X1 Beta 5 released
Marc pointed me to the new beta of X1.
X1 instantly searches files & email. For Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora and Netscape Mail.
I've just loaded it - it reconfirms to me that an interface with multiple panes (X1, Copernic) is far superior to the web-style interfaces (Google, Clarity, FileHand).
More as I continue to play ...
Konfabulator vs DesktopX
I was lucky enough to squeeze into the Konfabulator web site on Monday and snag a download. It is interesting to compare it with DesktopX from StarDock.
A bit of history - I tried the ObjectDesktop from StarDock a year or so ago. While it did what it said it would, I ended up removing it - the benefits just weren't worth the CPU cycles and the odd incompatibility it caused. (This is probably an artifact of the many software packages I load/unload.)
Anyway, I reloaded DesktopX on Monday night as well to do a comparison.
My initial reaction is to lean toward Konfabulator. Why?
- Konfabulator widgets look every so slightly better, but it's hard to explain why
- they are much easier to customize - I'm trying to get DesktopX to display weather for Ottawa with temp in Celcius, and it doesn't seem to take
- I went thorugh the list of DesktopX widgets and didn't see anything there that interested me that wasn't on Konfabulator
I haven't done any CPU checks yet - maybe on the weekend.
I will continue to play with both and keep an open mind.
